The use of composite materials in aerospace application is well known due to the excellent strength to mass ratio, the outstanding fatigue and corrosion resistance. The CNC controlled filament winding process opens a wide field of applications, as this process is highly automated compared to other aerospace manufacturing processes. CNC controlled filament winding offers manufacturing aerospace components with outstanding high quality level coupled with a high degree of reproducibility and cost efficiency.
Particularly in tubular and closed structures, the filament winding technology offers many advantages in comparison to other manufacturing technologies such as prepreg technology. In particular the advantages are based on the highly automated manufacturing process. During the production of tubular components in filament winding no post compaction appears and therefore no fibre buckling occurs. Through the CNC controlled filament winding process components such as struts, tierods, AIRSTRUT® tension and compression bars, torque tubes, bearings, Isogrid tube structures and pressure vessels are made of modern composite materials for these specific applications.
